Afrikaanse Dag Den Haag op zaterdag 14 november 2009 was enorm succes
Speciale dank aan GGD Den Haag en aan alle Afrikaanse organsaties en individuen die aanwezig waren op deze dag. De ondertekende verklaring tegen VGV werd overhandigd aan Wethouder Bert van Alphen, Imam en pastor spraken zich uit tegen VGV, lekker Afrikaans eten en Afrikaanse trommels at their best.

Declaration of the Conference
‘Uniting Europe and Africa to fight Female Genital Mutilation’
To accelerate abandonment and eradication of the practice of Female Genital Mutilation in Africa and to place this on the high Agenda of the council of the European Union, Declaration of the Conference, ‘Uniting Europe and Africa to fight Female Genital Mutilation’ was organized in The Hague on the 25th of November 2009.
There were various kinds of workshops on this subject and a lot was said about the need to unite Europe and Africa to fight Female Genital Mutilation (FMG).
For the past 40 years, populations have been migrating from Africa to Europe and FGM has become a growing problem within the European Union. Tough action against FGM in single European countries will not necessarily lead to a reduction in the total number of victims, because parents will take their daughter(s) to countries without strict policies on the practice.
European and African strategy is crucial to be developed by the European and African commissions to help eradicate FGM.
Furthermore, it was said that the WHO estimates of women and girls that have been subjected to FGM worldwide was between 100 and 140 million, UNICEF estimated that 3 million girls in Africa are at risk of being subjected every year to FGM. And approximately 180,000 female immigrants in Europe undergo FGM or are in danger of being subjected to the procedure.
To push this fight further, four Ambassadors for the abandonment en eradication of the practice of female Genital Mutilation were appointed by the State Secretary for Health, Welfare and Sport, Ms Jet Bussemaker. The Ambassadors are: Zahra Naleie from Somali, Alen Dasta from Ethiopia, Dalia Abddrehman from Sudan (absent) and James Owie from Nigeria.
We all took different pledges which was filmed and shown to the participants.
I pledged to involve as much as many African men as possible in this fight, to encourage them to support their wives and to feel with those women who have already gone through FGM and are living with the pain and other kinds of suffering caused by FGM. Prevent young girls from those parents who are still ignorant of FGM and to educate these parents about FGM and let them know that FGM is a thing of the past.
The Ambassadors will been meeting within a short time with the representatives from the ministery of Health, Welfare and Sport to discuss further details and once that is done, they will be on this website for you to read.
Among dignities present were: Mr Bert Koenders (Minister for the Development Cooperation), Francesca Moneti (Senior Child protection Specialist UNICEF), Berhane Ras-Work (IAC Executive Director, Inter Africa Committee), Susan McLucas (Secretary General), Sini Sanuman (Director Healthy Tomorrow) and Ms Jet Bussemaker ( State Secretary for Health, Welfare and Sport).
It was a tremendous success and the declaration was signed.

De Internationale dag Zero Tolerance tegen VGV

Ter voorbereiding op en ter bekendmaking van de internationale conferentie op 6 februari 2008 zullen gedurende januari op verschillende locaties in Nederland activiteiten gehouden worden door lokale zelforganisaties uit gemeenschappen waar meisjesbesnijdenis traditioneel voorkomt.
Het gaat om verschillende soorten activiteiten zoals voorlichting, film en discussie. Het doel van deze activiteiten is om binnen de zgn risicogroepen (gemeenschappen waar meisjesbesnijdenis traditioneel voorkomt) het bewustzijn over de schadelijkheid van deze traditie te bevorderen, het taboe om daarover te discussiëren te doorbreken, bekend te maken dat er geen enkele relatie is tussen meisjesbesnijdenis en de Islam, en meer bekendheid te geven aan de Internationale dag Zero Tolerance tegen VGV.

Achtergrondinfo Internationale Dag Zero Tolerance tegen Vrouwelijke Genitale Verminking
Op 6 februari 2003 hield het Inter African Committee (IAC) een Internationale Conferentie in Addis Abeba waar afgevaardigden van 30 Afrikaanse landen discussieerden over de traditie van meisjesbesnijdenis en de ernstig schadelijke gevolgen die deze traditie heeft voor vrouwen. De afgevaardigden waren het er unaniem over eens dat er een eind moet komen aan deze traditie in Afrika en de rest van de wereld. Het IAC stelde een gemeenschappelijke agenda op om tussen 2003 en 2010 wereldwijd een einde te maken aan deze schadelijke traditie. Daarnaast riepen zij 6 februari uit tot de Internationale Dag van Zero Tolerance Against Female Genital Mutilation (FGM) en sporen sindsdien alle landen aan om deze dag jaarlijks te herdenken en op deze manier de strijd tegen Vrouwelijke Genitale Verminking (VGV) te stimuleren.
Platform 6/2
In Nederland is Platform 6/2 speciaal opgericht, met leden uit verschillende maatschappelijke organisaties, om gehoor te geven aan de oproep van het Inter Afcrican Committee. Sinds 2004 organiseert Platform 6/2 elk jaar op 6 februari een internationale conferentie om in Nederland meer bekendheid aan VGV te geven en discussie te voeren over de wijze waarop VGV bestreden kan worden.
2008
Terugkijkend op de nationale en internationale bestrijding van VGV tot nu toe: Hoe haalbaar lijkt dan de doelstelling van het Inter-African Committee om tussen nu en 2010 een einde te maken aan alle vormen van VGV over de hele wereld?
Wat zijn de voornaamste obstakels in de strijd tegen VGV, welke koerswijzigingen zijn nodig in de nationale en internationale actieplannen en welke partijen moeten beter betrokken worden in de strijd tegen VGV? Op deze vragen zullen we trachten antwoorden te formuleren met behulp van genodigde sprekers en aanwezigen opdat we gezamenlijk nog beter kunnen werken aan een wereld zonder meisjesbesnijdenis..
